Determined? That’s an Understatement

My name is Mikayla Martin. I typically go by that at school and don’t have other names, but I’m always on the lookout. I’m a sophomore from Norman, Oklahoma and I’ve always known that the University of Oklahoma was home. My parents and older brother graduated from OU, so I knew I wanted to carry-on our family tradition and hopefully it continues.

I’ve always been a determined person. My mom constantly reminds me of how persistent I was as a child and I am still the same. Being raised by two strong parents led me to be independent and determined to achieve all my goals. I always give my all and pour my heart into everything I do. My family motivates me because I want to make them proud and take advantage of all the opportunities I’ve been given because in the past not everyone was that lucky. A second motivation of mine is my ancestry. Being an African American, I want to show my respect to everyone who fought for the rights I have today.

Public relations. I define it as a career involving being personable and being the one to handle all communication. Public relations is an exciting career that keeps you on your toes, which catches my attention. I love fast-paced environments, being around people and planning. All of my interests compliment a career in public relations and I can’t wait to begin my journey.
